  • Chris Farias asked his local bakery in Canada for "the gayest cake they could make," according to his Instagram and Facebook posts.
  • The rainbow design, complete with a golden unicorn horn, was so extravagant that the cake went viral.
  • Cake and Loaf Bakery told INSIDER that they are overwhelmed with the positive response, and that they couldn't imagine denying anybody a cake based on who they love.

Facebook user Chris Farias didn't want just any cake for his one-year engagement to fiancé Jared Lenover. So he went to Cake and Loaf Bakery in Ontario, Canada, to order "the gayest cake they could make," according to Farias' Facebook, as reported by BuzzFeed.

The bakery did not disappoint. It came back with the most extravagant rainbow cake, complete with pillowy swirls of icing and a golden unicorn sticking straight out of the top.

Farias was so overjoyed with the dessert that he was in tears, as he mentioned in his Facebook caption. Referencing both his pride and the US Supreme Court case about the Colorado bakery that denied a gay couple a cake, Farias wrote: "I am proud to be a gay Canadian who can order a cake and not get turned down because of who I love. I love this country, and I love my community."

And as Farias later pointed out on Instagram, "It's not about a cake. It's about inclusion, human rights, and so much more."

The masterpiece cake was decorated by Quinn Pallister, who told INSIDER that, although she makes cakes every day, this one is close to her heart.

"As a child of two moms, I couldn't imagine a world where they were denied access to something as simple as a wedding cake. And to know that happens elsewhere in the world really hits home," she wrote.

Pallister also expressed how "overwhelming" the response has been.

"Whenever something goes 'viral' on the internet you always expect to see some negative backlash, but the response has been so positive," she wrote. "Seeing so many message of love and congratulations for Chris and his Jared has been nothing short of amazing. I'm honored to have contributed to this by doing something I love so much. I never thought cake decorating could turn into social justice, but I am so here for it."

The bakery's owners, Nicole Miller and Josie Rudderham, agree with Pallister's sentiments. "It's very important to us to provide our employees and customers with a safe, inclusive space," they told INSIDER in an email.

"We can't imagine denying someone a cake based on who they love — the thought never crossed our mind," they said. "We're honored Chris chose us to help celebrate his engagement, and granted our cake decorators the creative freedom to craft such a delicious work of art."

Since the original Facebook post on December 13, Farias has received over 4,000 shares and hundreds of heartwarming comments commending him and the bakery.

One Facebook user commented, "This is absolutely amazing!!!!! A friend posted it and it literally made my whole day! Thank you for being you, Canada❤️. And many congratulations to the happy couple!"

Another person tagged Cake and Loaf Bakery, adding, "Now this is a beautiful story. ❤️"

Somebody else wrote, "Lovely on the baker's talent, lovely on the sentiment, lovely on everything! You should be so happy and proud!"

Here's the entire caption for Farias' original Facebook post:

"In celebrating my engagement to Jared Lenover(It's been a year... 8 months 'till the big day!!) I wanted to get him a cake to celebrate (he loves cake...as do I!). So I called my local bakery, Cake and Loaf Bakery, and requested the GAYEST cake they could make. Without hesitation, and with much excitement, they said "We'll do it!!!"

This is what I got. I am in tears right now I'm so happy.

Being part of the LGBTQ+ community isn't easy for many. And that's an huge understatement. But I am proud of who I am, and how far WE have come. I am proud to be a gay Canadian who can order a cake and not get turned down because of who I love. I love this country, and I love my community.

If you believe that #LoveIsLove, please share, and show our neighbours to the south that we support them. That we empathize with their struggles. That Canada is loud and proud and will make them any cake their heart desires."

And here's Farias' complete Instagram caption:

"It's not about a cake. It's about inclusion, human rights, and so much more.

Thank you everyone around the world for the heartfelt messages. It has made my Christmas.
Love is Love. Let's change the world together!"
