- Princess Diana graced the cover of People magazine in 1991 wearing an old school Eagles jacket.
- Longtime Eagles statistician Jack Edelstein sent Princess Diana the jacket after meeting the royal at Grace Kelly's funeral.
- Diana revealed to Edelstein that her favorite colors were silver and green, which resulted in some custom-made Eagles gear.
I'm from South Jersey — "Cherry Hill area, right outside Philadelphia" is my usual response — which automatically makes me a fan of all Philly-based sports teams. And with Super Bowl Sunday around the corner, I plan on spending the evening cheering on the Eagles while eating a ton of wings, preferably at a bar that serves Miller High Life for cheap.
Because it's still hard to find attractive-looking sports fan apparel for women, I, unfortunately, don't have any official Eagles paraphernalia to wear for the big game, but what I do have is a very cool T-shirt with a photo of Princess Diana wearing an Eagles jacket. I bought it on a whim from a shop called Yowie that's based in Philly's Queen Village neighborhood. Its owner, Shannon Maldonado, released the limited-edition tee in pure drop culture fashion via Instagram, and it quickly sold out. After checking the site again this week, a second restock shows some sizes are still available.
Is the photo of Princess Di real? Yes. (It even made it onto the cover of People in 1994.) Was she a true Birds fan? Probably. How did the British royal even get her hands on American football swag? The late, longtime Eagles statistician Jack Edelstein. The two met at the funeral of Grace Kelly, who hails from Philadelphia and was a longtime friend of Edelstein, and struck up a conversation. Long story short: Diana revealed that her favorite colors were green and silver, and so Edelstein promised to send her some Eagles gear, including a custom-made jacket that you see in the photo above. Pretty cool, right?
Another fun fact: A Philly Taco is a Jim's Steaks cheesesteak wrapped with a Lorenzo's pizza slice. Let's go Birds.
