Meet The 20 Most Powerful Publicists In Hollywood [Ranked]

$
0
0

publicists

When most people think of publicists, they picture someone like Vincent Chase's fast-talking, cell phone-addicted, workaholic publicist, Shauna Roberts (expertly played by Debi Mazar) on HBO's "Entourage."

In reality, most of these traits are actually true of Hollywood publicists, who are on-call 24/7 for their A-list clients.

Whether they're crafting an actor's image, babysitting a hard-partying starlet, fielding phone calls from press, or helming a multi-million dollar movie campaign, publicists are an integral part of the showbiz machine.

And they're getting paid big bucks to do so. "The most basic services start at $4,500 a month and escalate toward what she calls 'the high six figures' annually for corporate clients," reports one top Hollywood publicist in a 2011 New York Times profile.

So we decided to rank them based on their power in the business.

Our picks are based on the wattage of their client roster, feats accomplished, the nominations we asked for in August, and by talking to industry insiders such as journalists and producers who work with publicists on a regular basis, to get a sense of who really holds the keys to Hollywood.

Between TV, film studio, and celebrity publicists, we couldn't possibly fit everyone on our list, so the following represents at least one in each category.

Although they often prefer to remain under the radar and let their clients soak up the spotlight, publicists know how important image can be. When we asked each of the 20 publicists on our list for further information, almost every single one replied: "Who else is on the list?"

20.) John Wentworth, Executive Vice President at CBS Television Distribution

Clients: "Dr. Phil," "The Doctors," "Rachel Ray," "Entertainment Tonight," "The Insider," "Inside Edition," "Excused," "Judge Judy," "Judge Joe Brown," "Wheel of Fortune," "Jeopardy!" and "Swift Justice With Nancy Grace."

Memorable moment: Launching such long-running shows.

Why he makes the list: In addition to helping launch a long list of successful TV shows, Wentworth oversees the publicity of 12 syndicated shows. Before his current position at CBS, Wentworth was EVP of Marketing and Communications for 11 years at Paramount Network Television.

19.) Nicole Perna, BWR

Clients: Jessica Chastain, Chloe Moretz, Sharon Osbourne, Jenna Dewan, Lucy Hale, Johnny Galecki, Ryan Phillippe, Diane Kruger, Nikki Reed, Kellan Lutz.

Memorable moment: Perna reportedly lost her temper after an Australia morning show teased an interview with her client Nicole Richie by showing video of the star's troubled past.

Why she makes the list: Perna, who has been at BWR since 2002, was promoted in June to help develop new strategies to support talent in a changing digital landscape. In an announcement, BWR partner Nanci Ryder said Perna has "shown tremendous skill in client development over the years ... With [her] leadership and insight we see the opportunity for continued growth and diversification of this company.”

18.) Jill Fritzo, Publicist at PMK*BNC

Clients: Kim Kardashian, Khloe Kardashian, Kourtney Kardashian, Brooke Shields, Shannen Doherty, Denise Richards, Kristin Chenoweth, Vanessa Hudgens, Michael Strahan.

Memorable moment: "I have had so many memorable career moments. I love my job and every day it is exciting to be a part of what the clients are doing and what they are passionate about. I feel very lucky to have this job and be able to be a part of some very cool things! Memorable career moments are getting to work with some people who I idolized growing up."

Why she makes the list: She reps all three of the Kardashian sisters. Last year alone, the Kardashian empire pulled in roughly $65 million.

Oprah Jason Russell

On March 7, Invisible Children co-founder Jason Russell released a video titled #Kony2012 —urging viewers to help stop terrorist gang leader Joseph Kony—that became the most viral video of all time.

But by March 19, the newfound fame and unanticipated negative critical reaction proved too much for Russell to bear and he was videotaped having a naked breakdown on the streets of San Diego.

Nearly seven months later, Russell is speaking out for the first time about his very public meltdown.

TMZ has exclusively obtained part of the transcript of Russell's sit down interview with Oprah Winfrey on an upcoming October 7 episode of "Oprah's Next Chapter."

There is not yet any video available, but read part of the interview exchange below:

OPRAH: "What do you remember, Jason?"

JASON: "I remember me flipping off cars."

OPRAH: "Flipping off cars? Like with your..."

JASON: "With both hands. I remember that just like 'doot,' just like a little memory. I remember running around our lemon tree. I remember ..."

OPRAH: "There were reports that you were breaking into cars?"

JASON: "There are reports. I mean I think I was stopping cars in the street. People said I was laying in the street – it's a busy street – I was laying in the street."

OPRAH: "How did you get your robe off? How do you go from running out with your robe on to your robe off?"

JASON: "Again, it's really hard to explain if people who have never had an out-of-body experience, but it really wasn't me. That wasn't me, that person on the street corner ranting and raving and naked is not me, that's not who I am."

JASON: [I remember] walking around snapping my fingers up and down ... slapping my hands on the ground as hard as I can. Just slapping them on the ground. Talking to myself. Ranting. Raving. Talking about good versus evil, God and the devil. I mean it was just very out of control."

'Saved By The Bell' Star Lark Voorhies Has Bipolar Disorder, Says Her Mother

Lark Voorhies

Actress Lark Voorhies, famous for playing "Lisa" on five seasons of "Saved By The Bell," today only vaguely resembles her former sitcom self.

After a recent interview on Yahoo's "The Yo Show" (see below video) revealed an out of sorts, rambling and nearly unrecognizable Voorhies, rumors started to swirl that the 38-year-old actress was on drugs, or has had loads of plastic surgery.

The claims were only made more substantial after Voorhies then gave an interview to People magazine, in which "it was clear something wasn't right ... [Voorhies] would frequently stop mid-sentence and stare off, often mumbling to herself or to others who weren't there."

But Voorhies' mother, who lives with her daughter in Pasadena, tells People that the odd behavior isn't a result of drugs or alcohol, but that her daughter has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

Lark Voorhies"There are things that have traumatized her," her mother Tricia revealed to the mag. "I care deeply about my daughter and I want her to resume her life."

But Voorhies denies the claims, saying her mother is "over-loving" and explains her vacant stares and rambling moments were the result of catching her in "moments of pray."

But her former "Saved By the Bell" co-star Dustin Diamond, aka Screech, also told People after a recent reunion spread, "I was always used to playing off of her and looking into her eyes ... When I saw her at the commentary, it wasn't the Lark I knew."

Watch the interview the sparked worry for Voorhies' well-being:

Guy Fieri's Paycheck Affords Him Much More Than Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives

$

guy fieri

Guy Fieri can afford to dine in more than just "Diner, Drive-Ins and Dives"—the title of his popular Food Network show—with the paycheck he gets for making public appearances.

Fieri has become the unofficial face (and spiked, bleach blond hair) of the Food Network since he started hosting the show in 2006.

After making friends across the country visiting small town eateries and big city dive joints, Fieri has become a familiar face nationwide—and fans are willing to pay the big bucks to meet the famous foodie in person.

"Fieri was paid $100,000 for a 60-minute appearance at the New York State Fair in late-August, according to contract documents. Fieri's company, Knuckle Sandwich LLC, was also paid $1500 to cover his travel costs," reports The Smoking Gun.

In comparison, TSG reports that TLC's "Cake Boss" Buddy Valestro earns $65,000 to make personal appearances, and Fieri's "paycheck is more than twice what touring acts like Hammer, Loretta Lynn, and the Oak Ridge Boys earn for summer shows."

Fieri's $100K payday is, however, on par with what singer Meatloaf commands for a single performance.

The Food Network star's empire also includes seven restaurants in Califronia and a newly-opened 600-seat New York outpost called Guy's American Kitchen And Bar in Times Square

Just don't expect to see TV chef rival Anthony Bourdain dining in Fieri's new digs, as he says the restaurant has "single-handedly turned the neighborhood into the Ed Hardy district," adding he feels bad for the customers who come "waddling in" to find $18 hamburgers and French fries for $12 on the menu.

Check out Fieri in action at O'Rourke's diner in Middletown, Connecticut:

Director David Alan recently spent some time with Chris Brown.

Alan put together a short video titled, "The Real Chris Brown". The 90 second video offers a glimpse into the personal life of Brown, particularly his love life.

Brown is obviously inebriated in the video, but the singer takes time out to explains that he just likes to be honest and that he is "stressed out".

The video then quickly switches gears to montages of Brown with Rihanna and separately with his former girlfriend Karrueche Tran.

Rumors have been swirling recently that Brown and former flame Rihanna have rekindled their love, despite Brown being in a relationship with Tran until just recently

In the video Brown says, "when you share a history with someone, then you tend to fall in love with someone else, it's kind of difficult..." Brown goes on to ask Alan, "is there a such thing as loving two people?"

Just a few days ago Brown was spotted getting hot and heavy with Rihanna in New York City.

Instead of giving us a glimpse into "The Real Chris Brown" the video seems to have left us even more confused.

Watch the video for yourself (warning some profanity):

Daryl Hannah Arrested After Protesting $7 Billion Oil Pipeline

"Kill Bill" actress Daryl Hannah, 51, was arrested (again) Thursday for protesting the creation of an oil pipeline in Texas designed to bring crude from Canada to the Gulf Coast.

The actress, along with landowner Eleanor Fairchild, 78, were standing in front of heavy equipment in an attempt to halt construction of the Keystone XL pipeline on Fairchild's farm in Winnsboro, a town about 100 miles east of Dallas, reports AP.

The actress was charged with criminal trespass and resisting arrest, paying a $1,000 and a $3,000 bond, respectively.

"It is unfortunate Ms. Hannah and other out-of-state activists have chosen to break the law by illegally trespassing on private property," David Dodson, a spokesman for TransCanada Corp., told the AP, adding they were "putting their own safety and the safety of others at risk."

After being released around midnight Thursday, Hannah told KLTV:

"I was peacefully protesting the unwanted advances of Trans Canada on Eleanor Fairchild's land. She has stated very clearly that she doesn't want them there and they insist on bullying her and taking away her land through eminent domain ... We just sort of stood in front of them and held our hands in a stop motion. I'm holding my wrist because there was this private security guard hired by TransCanada and he injured my wrist."

Hannah's manager, Paul Bassis, added, "The streets of Winnsboro will be much safer tonight now that they've gotten that 78-year-old great grandmother off the streets."

Hannah was also arrested in August 2011 while protesting a pipeline in Washington.

#Kony2012's Jason Russell Opens Up To Oprah On Breakdown: 'It Was Very Out Of Control'

Oprah Jason Russell

On Sunday's episode of "Oprah's Next Chapter" on OWN, #Kony2012 filmmaker Jason Russell recounted his very public, naked breakdown for the first time.

"I don't know who that was. I look at that video and I think 'How sad for him,'" Russell explained seven months after the incident.

In March, Russell's 30-minute YouTube video urging viewers to help stop terrorist gang leader Joseph Kony became the most viral video of all time. Russell was thrown into the spotlight, but the newfound and unanticipated negative critical reaction proved too much to bear and he was videotaped having a naked breakdown on the streets of San Diego.

Russell was then taken to a mental health clinic, where he says it took two weeks for him to feel normal again, recalling: "I was so confused. I thought people were trying to kill me." Doctors said the filmmaker had suffered a psychotic break.

When Winfrey asked the married-with-children Russell about rumors he's gay, the 33-year-old explains: "I grew up in theater, my parents started a large children's theater organization, so I am animated, I am ... theatrical. That's me by nature. So when you take me, times it by ten ... ."

Watch Russell open up to Oprah about the breakdown below:

On accusations that he's kept charitable donations:

"It was just hurtful, how do you respond to people who actually believe you're just pocketing the money? What a terrible person you are in their eyes."

Watch Russell on this morning's "Today" show:

"My mind couldn't stop thinking about the future ... I literally thought I was like the future of humanity. It started to go to the point where my mind turned against me."

As for how he's recovering, Russell told "Today," "It's just been really spending time with my family, a lot of slowing down, yoga, therapy ... It's really been healing for the mind, body and soul."

Russell's organization Invisible Children released their latest video today, stating #Kony2012 was "the start of an experiment and it's not over yet." Watch below:

Veteran Movie Publicist & Mom Of 'Grey's Anatomy' Star Dies After Accidental Fall

Lois Smith Meryl Streep

As one of the founders of PMK publicity firm, Lois Smith helped helm the careers of Marilyn Monroe, Robert Redford, Martin Scorsese, Meryl Streep, Warren Beatty, Liza Minnelli, Whitney Houston and Rosie O’Donnell.

After a long career in the industry, Smith died Sunday at age 85 after suffering a brain hemorrhage due to an accidental fall at a bed-and-breakfast.

Smith was in Maine at the time, where her husband, Eugene Smith, was set to be recognized for his philanthropic work.

Smith retired in 2010 after a trailblazing career in publicity. According to The Hollywood Reporter:

Lois Smith, along with Pat Kingsley, Gerry Johnson and Pat Newcomb, formed Pickwick Public Relations in 1969. "We called ourselves Pickwick because we were amiable eccentrics - the staff and the client list," Smith later said. In 1980, the firm merged with another agency Maslansky/Koeningsberg and was renamed PMK, where Smith and Kingsley were also joined by Leslee Dart. PMK, which was acquired by the Interpublic Group in 1999, eventually merged with another of Interpublic’s agencies, HBH, to become PMK/HBH and in late 2009, as the result of yet another merger, it became known as PMK*BNC.

In 2003, Smith won the Publicist Guild’s Life Achievement Award, Scorsese states, “Lois stands out as a beacon in the industry,” said the famed director. “What matters to her is the art as it should be.”

Brooke Smith Grey's Anatomy

In an interview in 2010, Smith, who was retired at the time, said:

“I’m so glad I’m not doing publicity now. Between celebrity magazines and Web sites, there’s so much out there to be filled up, so much information that has to be put out there simply because those publications exist. First of all, whatever you’re pushing, it becomes a story 30 seconds after you put it out there. I don’t care about hearing so much information minute by minute. People are desperate to fill the space they’ve got; they’ll print anything, go with anything, pursue rumors, and even create them. It’s not what I call publicity.”

In addition to being a well-respected publicist, Smith was also mother to three children, one of whom is "Grey's Anatomy" actress Brooke Smith.

'Girls' Creator Lena Dunham Signs An Enormous Book Deal

Lena Dunham

In one of the most heated literary auctions of the year, Random House has officially acquired 26-year-old "Girls" creator Lena Dunham's 66-page book proposal for a whopping $3.5 million.

The book will be a collection of essays tentatively titled “Not That Kind of Girl: A Young Woman Tells You What She’s Learned."

While bidding started at $1 million and went beyond even $3.5 million, "Ms. Dunham chose Random House Publishing Group over the weekend after meeting with several publishers as late as Friday afternoon," reports The New York Times.

Susan Kamil, the editor-in-chief and publisher of Random House, who purchased both U.S. and Canadian rights to the book, confirmed the acquisition on Monday, stating:

“We’re thrilled to welcome Lena to Random House. Her skill on the page as a writer is remarkable—fresh, wise, so assured. She is that rare literary talent that will only grow from strength to strength and we look forward to helping her build a long career as an author.”

Dunham also confirmed the news, saying she is "thrilled to be working with and learning from the brilliant minds at Random House, and to be among their incredible roster of authors. I look forward to digging deep with Andy [The essay collection will be edited by Andy Ward, an executive editor at Random House] and co. to produce the most thoughtful and personal book I can.”

The book proposal cites Helen Gurley Brown’s Having It All as a kind of inspiration and will contain advice-offering essays about everything from sex and friendship to work and eating disorders.

One chapter is reportedly titled “Body" and reads, “Red lipstick with a sunburn: How to dress for a business meeting and other hard-earned fashion lessons from the size 10 who went to the Met Ball.”

Random House hopes that Dunham's hefty pay day will result in the same success as Tina Fey's best-selling memoir  "Bossypants," for which the  "30 Rock" creator received a reported $5 million.

David Blaine Gets Electrocuted For 72 Hours Straight In Latest Stunt

$

0

David Blaine

David Blaine, the 39-year-old Brooklyn native who has made a name for himself by performing "endurance art," is at it again.

This time, instead of subjecting himself to 63 hours inside a giant ice block (like he did in 2000), or living on only water for 44 days (like he did in 2003), Blaine is being electrocuted with one million volts of electricity for 72 hours.

And in true David Blaine fashion, he is letting the public watch the entire time and is even live-streaming the event on YouTube.

The Intel-sponsored stunt involves Blaine wearing a Faraday suit, meant to block the electricity from harming him, while a million volts of electricity are sent through his body. For the entire 72 hours (Friday night through Monday), he will be standing on a platform high above the crowd in Pier 54 in Manhattan.

Audience members are able to control the voltage amounts, set to different music, by using laptops set up around the stage.

"You feel it, but it feels beautiful. It feels powerful. It's like a current going through you, but it doesn't hurt you. It feels intense," Blaine said in a behind-the-scenes video about the stunt. "You feel like you're in the middle of something way more powerful than you...You're in the middle of this beautiful phenomenon in nature that you're not supposed to get near. And you feel like you're in the middle of something way more powerful than you. Something could always go wrong, but it feels beautiful."

While the media and the public have pegged Blaine's performances as "stunts," he doesn't characterize them this way.

"I don't think it's thrill-seeking. I never look at these really as stunts, either. I just like to look at these things as going to uncharted territory. It's like going to outer space or the depths of the ocean," he said in another video

Blaine will be standing for the entire 72 hours with no food or water, so he says he needs the crowd to help him get through the three day span.

"I'm going to need a ton of support from the outside, like people interacting , communicating. I'm going to need a lot of distractions."

With this stunt, as well as others he has done, Blaine says there are always going to be those who don't believe in what he is doing.

"There's always those people that come look at these things I do and say it's all fake, he's a magician, it's not real. The ones that want to say it's all fake, they're gonna pick apart anything. I don't think you can pay much attention. I think you just do it and do it to the best way possible."

Watch David Blaine's reaction when he sees the stunt structure finally completed. (skip to 4.45)

'GMA' Weatherman Sam Champion Comes Out By Announcing His Engagement To Boyfriend

Sam Champion

"Good Morning America" weather anchor Sam Champion has come out of the closet after 14 years on the popular morning program.

But that's not all, the 51-year-old has also just announced that he is engaged to his longterm boyfriend, Brazilian fine-arts photographer Rubem Robierb.

This marks the first time that a co-host of a network morning television show has publicly identified as gay, although Champion's sexual orientation was always known to “GMA" staff, as well as his colleagues and competitors in the media industry.

The engagement news was first broken in a New York Times wedding announcement for “MSNBC Live” host Thomas Roberts and Patrick Abner last week.

The announcement broke—and buried—the Champion's news, writing:

Among the 170 or so guests at the reception was Sam Champion, the weather anchor at ABC’s “Good Morning America.” He took a turn on the dance floor with his partner, the photographer Rubem Robierb.

“We’re getting married New Year’s Eve in Miami,” Mr. Champion said in the spirit of the moment.

Mr. Robierb corrected him: “We’ll do it here officially, and then have a party in Miami.”

"The amazing response from folks all over the country was just incredible for us," Champion exclaimed today on "GMA." "Thank you for the Tweets, and the Facebook and just coming up on the street and saying the most wonderful things."

To watch Champion talk about his upcoming wedding on "GMA," click here.

The low key coming out follows a few months after CNN host Anderson Cooper went public with his sexual orientation and was done similarly to how "The Big Bang Theory" actor Jim Parsons came out this summer, with mention of his partner also buried in a Times article.

"Star Trek" actor Zachary Quinto also came out by discussing his sexuality for the first time in a New York magazine profile, saying of his role in the play "Angels," it was “the most challenging thing I’ve ever done as an actor and the most rewarding ... And at the same time, as a gay man, it made me feel like there’s still so much work to be done, and there’s still so many things that need to be looked at and addressed.”

Stan Lee Media Sues Disney For Billions In Alleged Copyright Infringement

Ever since Disney bought Marvel and its some 5,000 characters for $4 billion in 2009, the company has earned profits off Stan Lee's many characters in the form of action figures, toys, costumes, and a little film called "The Avengers."

However, one company claims Disney has no right to any of the characters.

Now, Stan Lee Media Inc. (SLMI), formerly affiliated with Lee, filed a complaint in the district court of Colorado claiming it, not The Walt Disney Company, own the rights to any and all of Stan Lee's characters including the very profitable "Avengers" gang which earned Disney more than $1 billion at theaters worldwide.

According to the complaint filed, the Colorado based SLMI claims Stan Lee assigned copyrights for all Marvel properties and characters over to it in October 1998, before signing them over to Marvel Enterprises Inc. one month later.

From the complaint:

"Oddly, in November, 1998, Stan Lee signed a written agreement with Marvel Enterprises, Inc. in which he purportedly assigned to Marvel the rights to the Characters. However, Lee no longer owned those rights since they had been assigned to SLEI previously. Accordingly, the Marvel agreement actually assigned nothing."

SLMI goes on to claim Disney's purchase of the Marvel characters in December 2009 means nothing since ownership was allegedly never really transferred from SLMI in the first place.

The company is seeking damages of $5.5 billion for copyright infringement citing Disney's use characters "Iron Man 2," "Thor," "X-Men: First Class," "The Avengers," and "The Amazing Spider-Man" in films amounting to box office receipts of $3.5 billion (some of which are produced by Sony and Universal) and other merchandising (including Broadway show "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark") amounting to an estimated revenue of $2 billion.

The problem?

This isn't the first time SLMI has cried true ownership of Lee's Marvel characters.

The company went after Lee himself for $5 billion after going into bankruptcy.

The case was dismissed in July on the basis of res judicata which prevents any further lawsuit on similar claims that were previously raised.

That ruling is currently on appeal questioning the ruling.

QVC Host Faints On Live TV In This Bizarre Video

QVC

Viewers of this weekend's QVC broadcast of "Sundays with Carolyn and Dan" were in for a big surprise.

In the middle of selling a tablet computer for kids, host Cassie Slane fainted on top of co-host Dan Hughes.

The camera quickly cut away to a still shot of the kid-friendly tablet, but noises can be heard in the background of Slane being carried away. Throughout the whole debacle, Hughes continues selling the product with no interruptions.

Clearly, QVC takes the phrase "the show must go on" quite literally.

Slang returns on camera less than two minutes later, but still doesn't seem completely back to normal. She slurs her speech and has trouble completing sentences. Hughes eventually suggests that Slane take a seat.

The following day, Slane reassured concerned viewers that she was OK.

"Thanks to everyone for your kind words. I am feeling alot better today!" the host wrote on her Facebook.

This was not the first time Slane has literally fallen ill on-air. A similar situation occurred in 2010 while she was pitching an e-reader.

Check out Slane's most recent on-air health scare: (skip to 1.07)
