Man Who 'Discovered' Drake Sues For Alleged Unpaid Royalties

Drake at the BET Awards.

Drake scored five MTV Video Music Awards nominations this morning, but that's about the only good news the rapper is getting today.

Jas Prince, the man who originally discovered Drake before he was signed to Lil Wayne's Young Money label, has filed a lawsuit in Manhattan State Supreme Court against the musician's management team for breach of contract and breach of fiduciary duty.

According to Courthouse News Service, "A Houston music scion credited with discovering rapper Drake says the artist's managers are withholding his $100,000 cut of profits and are stiffing Drake, putting 'the entire Drake business in jeopardy.'"

In total, there are 10 claims against Drake's current manager Cortez Bryant, Gerald "Gee" Roberson, Derrick Lawrence and the firm Aspire Music Group LLC.

"Prince says he and Bryant agreed to split their share of Drake's profits. Drake has since sold millions of records and won numerous awards," reports CNS. "The parties allegedly tried to resolve their differences with a settlement agreement ... They were to receive 22 percent of Aspire's share of profits, 22 percent of Aspire's ownership share of Drake's master recordings, and 5 percent of Drake's gross pay, according to the lawsuit."

But Aspire Music Group has allegedly refused to pay accordingly, and now Prince wants the court to appoint a receiver and bar the defendants from renegotiating their contracts with Drake until they get paid.

In an April interview, Prince did a Q&A with music vet/blogger Al Lindstrom, in which he revealed his happier history with the now-famous rapper:

Q: Where did you first hear of Drake? Who brought him across your plate?

A: MYSPACE! I always browse through the internet lookin for somethin new. I found him myself. I sent him a message lettin him know who I was and that I wanted to work with him, get his music to some people I know.

How did you pitch him to Wayne?

At first I was tellin him about him like, “Yo, you really need to check this dude Drake out,” and Wayne wasn’t tryin to hear it. Then one day while leavin the Galleria, I just threw his CD in and let it play. He was like, “Wait..who is this?,” and I was like “Drake…the guy I been tellin you about.” Wayne told me to book him on the next flight to Houston.

On July 27, country singer and "The Voice" judge Blake Shelton sent off a tweet he later regretted:

The tweet incited a Twitter war among Shelton's nearly two million followers, one of whom happened to be animal activist Ellen DeGeneres.

And after NPR blogger Barbara J. King asked if the tweet was a bad joke, Shelton responded by telling her to "Shut Up."

But eventually the backlash got to Shelton and he started to back track, saying he was just joking and that he wasn't even in Oklahoma at the time of the tweet.

After Taylor Swift, 22, was spotted spending 4th of July at the Kennedy compound in Hyannis Port, Mass., the singer was rumored to be dating Patrick Schwarzenegger, the 18-year-old son of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver.

But these new photos of Swift at the family compound just last weekend reveal that she is actually dating Conor Kennedy, the 18-year-old son of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and the late Mary Richardson Kennedy.

"Swift first became friendly with the clan when Robert F. Kennedy’s widow Ethel asked to meet her last year," reports GossipCop. "The singer later attended a documentary about Ethel at the Sundance Film Festival, along with Rory Kennedy, Ethel’s youngest daughter. They all kept in touch, and Swift was invited to spend July 4th with the family in Hyannis Port."

Fast forward three weeks and Swift was back in Hyannis Port this past weekend, where she rented a small house on the property—a requirement for guests by the property’s managers at the Edward M. Kennedy Institute, reports the New York Post.

According to The Post, Swift and the young Kennedy spent the weekend jumping on a trampoline, playing with a dog, attending a house party, eating pizza, sailing, going to church and taking romantic walks on the beach.

There have long been rumors about the colorful personal life of Larry Wachowski, who, along with his brother Andy, wrote and directed "The Matrix" trilogy.

Now, in a featurette for their upcoming film "Cloud Atlas," the pair have come out as a brother-and-sister unit.

"Hi, I'm Lana," the woman formerly known as Larry says, introducing herself.

Below are before and after photos of Larry, now Lana, followed by the full clip.

After divorcing his wife Thea Bloom in 2002, Wachowski attended the Cannes Film Festival with a person the British tabloids deemed a "cross dresser." Then in 2003, film journalist Dave Poland wrote of Wachowski undergoing a sex change.

"Every indication I have says that Larry Wachowski is now in the process of changing his sex," Poland wrote in The Gothamist. "Dressing in public like a woman, taking female hormones and yes, having a sex change operation."

This Photo Of A Scientologist Allegedly Being Punished In The Desert Is Chilling

$

This photograph of a palm tree in a circle of sand at the Church of Scientology's HQ at Gilman Hot Springs, in the California desert, doesn't look unusual at first glance.

But there is more to it than meets the eye.

Before we explain what we've been told is actually going on inside those concentric circles of raked sand, click on the photo to enlarge it, and see if you can figure out what's happening:

scientology running circle

The key to the image, which was published on this bulletin board for ex-Scientologists, can be found on the upper rim of the circle. It appears to be a lone figure wearing a white shirt, making his or her way around the edge of the sand. Here's a closeup:

scientology running circle

According to three people we spoke to, like Sinar Parman, the former chef for both church leader David Miscavige and the late church founder, L. Ron Hubbard, this sand circle was used as a punishment for Scientologists who fell out of favor with the church's hierarchy.

The church denies these claims and says the circle is a spiritual exercise (see its full statement below).

Parman claims the punishment required Scientologists to run around the tree for hours at a time. He told us in an email:

[It] is commonly referred to as the "running program" or renamed "Cause Resurgence Rundown". ... A rundown is a set of processes, usually in form of questions on the e meter in order to achieve a certain spiritual achievement. In this case it's a physical action of running around a "pole" in the photo — a palm tree, to achieve a spiritual goal. It fits the term of "auditing" which has the goal of improvement of one's spiritual being. It is supposed to be beneficial, spiritually.

However, David Miscavige perverted this and had people run around in very hot unbearable conditions and without the proper physical conditioning, nor proper shoes and thus transformed it to a form of punishment and abuse/cruelty. I have not done this rundown, but per accounts from those who did it, one is supposed to do it for 5 hours per day minimum and there were those who did it full time — the whole day except for meal times. This was applied to those who "messed up" or removed from their jobs, not those who are doing well as a reward.

The Church of Scientology insists this is not a punishment. A spokesperson told us:

The picture shows a person running on a well manicured running track in a lushly landscaped area. I even see a seating area with what looks like wooden benches. The person running is participating in a spiritual program which is part of the Scientology religion and covered in our Scripture. Many members of the Church choose to do this program voluntarily and for his or her spiritual fulfillment.  This particular picture has been floating around the internet for years and is not news.

Mark Bunker, a film director who is making a documentary about the church, also told us this is a picture of Scientology's running program. The alleged running program punishment has been discussed by ex-Scientologists before (you can read descriptions of it here and here and here.) But this photo is perhaps the only image of the alleged program being carried out.

The sand circle no longer exists, but you can see where it used to be in the lower left quadrant of this image of Scientology's HQ from Google Earth:

scientology running circle

Here's another view, showing the circle where unmanicured grass is now struggling to grow:

scientology running circle

The circle at Gilman Hot Springs was thought to have been abandoned around 2010. But according to Parman and Bunker, the running program continues to exist inside the church. Both sources told us that at the church's building in Clearwater, Fla., an indoor circle has been built for a similar purpose.

Karen de La Carriere, a former Scientologist who is now a dealer in Thomas Kinkade paintings, claims she experienced the punishment in 1982, at Clearwater. "For four months of my life I had to run around a pole. it's supposed to be a spiritual enlightening tool, theoretically," she said. She claims she was punished after being falsely accused of funneling money out of the church.

"Your knees start buckling, your ankles swell but ... you're made to do this 12 hours a day. Even if you're in pain or stumbling."

"The punishment ended when I claimed I had good wins, good enlightenment ... you have to write a success story ... saying all these great things happened to you, you're very, very happy and you want others to get the gains you had."

"I would have written anything to get off the program. That was the only way out."

UPDATE: Here's a video of a man on the circle in 2009, running in 94F heat (skip to 4.20):

Here's the church's full statement on this issue, from spokesperson Karin Pouw:

As anyone can see, it is obviously not “a Scientologist being punished in the desert” and such a statement would be defamatory.

Your question reflects a lack of religious tolerance that is, unfortunately, all too common in some media sources. Scientology is a relatively new religion and, while our religious practices are not as well known as other more established religions, we are seeking spiritual salvation. We work hard to answer common questions and put the information on our website at www.scientology.org and also our media center at www.scientologynews.org.

But back to the picture: there is no story here and I suspect you are being told wild stories from a small group of apostates who only seek to infect media with false and sensational allegations in order to further their religious-hate agenda. If you were given a picture of someone taking Communion from a Catholic apostate would that be “a Catholic being punished through forced feeding?” And would that be something the Business Insider would publish?

This Pilot Study Reveals The Trick To Keeping Anyone's Attention

$

angel hack team presenting

Sir Lancelot had the Holy Grail. Captain Ahab had Moby Dick. For scientists who study learning, the ultimate quest is to unlock the secrets of engagement. How do we engage students in learning, and then keep them in that state? So ardent is their search that it can lead them down paths that may seem, to the uninitiated, a bit silly — as demonstrated by two recent developments.

Last month, it emerged that the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which has directed millions of dollars into educational research, has awarded grants to study the use of galvanic skin response sensors in the classroom. Immediately dubbed “mood bracelets” and “educational pedometers” by critics, these are small devices worn around the wrist that gauge the user’s physiological arousal by measuring the amount of sweat on the skin. The idea is that a teacher instructing a roomful of students wearing the devices would instantly know who was engaged and who was bored or distracted. The problem is that the sensors are inexact indicators of the wearer’s mental state: a student’s nervous system might be active because there’s test coming up next period — or because there’s an attractive classmate one desk over.

Then last week, a professor of physics education at Kennesaw State University in Georgia reported the results of a pilot study using special glasses that track where and how long wearers direct their gaze. After analyzing the data produced by undergraduates who wore the glasses during lectures, professor David Rosengrant concluded that it was not the case, as many teachers believe, that students were most engaged for the first 15 minutes or so of class, after which their attention gradually slacked off. Rather, he said, student engagement ebbed and flowed over the course of the 70-minute lecture, and spiked whenever the professor used humor, stood close to the student, or talked about material that was not included in the Power Point presentation projected on a screen at the front of the room. Rosengrant also determined that cell phones and the web — especially Facebook — were the greatest obstacles to maintaining students’ engagement in the classroom.

Interesting, but hardly revelatory. Clearly, such devices have a long way to go before they can offer real insight into students’ thoughts and feelings. The irony is that, after many years of investigation, scientists already have a pretty good idea of what captures the attention of an audience — whether it’s students in a classroom, a group of coworkers at a meeting, or a gathering of guests in front of whom you’re making a toast. Follow the strategies below, and you won’t need a sweat sensor or special glasses to know that your listeners are fully engaged.

1. Stimulate curiousity

“Sometimes I think that we, as teachers, are so eager to get to the answers that we do not devote sufficient time to developing the question,” notes Dan Willingham, a cognitive scientist at the University of Virginia. “But it’s the question that piques people’s interest. Being told an answer doesn’t do anything for you.” Take the information you want your audience to know by the end and frame a question that will direct your listeners toward that answer.

2. Introduce change and surprise

Human beings quickly become habituated to the status quo. When something in our environment shifts, however, we start paying attention again. A good rule of thumb is to switch things up every 15 minutes or so — tell a joke or a story, show a picture, address your topic in a different way.

3. Stress relevance and concreteness

The human mind can’t handle too much abstraction. Bring your ideas down to earth by explaining how they connect to your listeners’ lives, and by embedding sensory details — what things look, sound, feel and taste like — into your account.

4. Tell stories

Researchers who study human cognition say that stories are “psychologically privileged” — that is, our minds treat them differently than other kinds of information. We understand them better, remember them more accurately, and we find them more engaging to listen to in the first place. When planning your presentation, think about how to capture your ideas in a narrative. And remember, good stories usually have strong characters, a conflict — the main character can’t get what he wants — and complications on the way to overcoming that conflict. Come to think of it, a lot like the stories of the Holy Grail and Moby Dick.

Here’s Why A Bank Is Suing Nelly For $300K

Nelly

Rapper Nelly and Hall of Fame running back Marshall Faulk owe the bank a lot of money.

Breman Bank and Trust filed a suit in St. Louis County Circuit Court Thursday against the pair along with St. Louis lawyer N. Scott Rosenblum and Carrie Campbell, to pay up for for defaulting on a $318,000 promissory note.

According to the suit, the group borrowed about $1.67 million from the bank and put two pieces of property in Clayton, Missouri up as collateral.  The bank is seeking the difference between the loan amount and what they made after selling the properties.

This isn’t the first time the group has gotten into legal trouble. In March, along with Colin Reily and NBA stars Darius Miles and Larry Hughes, they were sued by Truman Bank for millions after misrepresenting the value of a former Planet Hollywood location.

The Surprising Real Names Of 25 Celebrities

$

whoopi goldberg

Plenty of Hollywood's biggest names don't go by their birth names–Demi Moore, Tina Fey, Mila Kunis, and Dakota Fanning

However, you probably don't know how the celebrities ended up with their current monikers.

Some are simple–Nicolas Cage, nephew of Francis Ford Coppola, changed his last name to make a name for himself without the worries of Hollywood nepotism.

Others, like Michael Caine and Martin Sheen are more inspired. And then there's Whoopi Goldberg, whose name was Caryn Johnson until friends noticed her flatulence problem.

Demi Moore — Demetria Gene Guynes

Moore kept the last name of her first husband Freddy Moore after they divorced in 1984.

Daughter Tallulah also legally changed her name to Lula. Father Bruce Willis first broke the news in 2007 on "The Late Show with David Letterman."

"She wanted me to mention here on the big show that she's legally changing her name from Talullah to Lula, just Lula," said Willis. "She doesn't like her name."

Reese Witherspoon — Laura Jeanne

The "Sweet Home Alabama" actress traded her first and middle name in for her mother's maiden name, "Reese."

Katy Perry — Kathryn (Katy) Hudson

Before she was a chart-topping singer, Perry was producing Christian music, under her birth name, Kathryn Hudson. She released gospel record Katy Hudson under the former label Red Hill Records before adopting her mother's maiden name to avoid confusion with this actress Kate Hudson.

Meet The All-Girl Punk Band Putin Wants Kept In Prison

$

0

pussy-riot

Just days before Putin's third re-election, a group of political activists called Pussy Riot performed a "punk prayer" titled "Mother of God, Banish Putin," in Russia's holiest site – the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour.

Filmed by a fellow activist, the YouTube video of their defiant performance quickly amassed millions of hits and became the ultimate national "symbol of the opposition movement."

On March 5, the day after Vladimir Putin was re-elected as President, two of the members were arrested. Very soon after, the third member joined them in jail. Now six months after committing their "crime," these three women are being tried for "hooliganism motivated by religious hatred." They face up to seven years of jail time if found guilty.

Now, the jailed women have become synonymous with the anti-Putinist regime, gaining both domestic and international recognition for their "radical" religious ideology in which the Church is separate from the State (as dictated by the Russian Constitution). Among their supporters are internationally renown musicians, authors, and organizations, including Madonna, Amnesty International, and British writer, Stephen Fry.

Who are the girls behind Putin's punk prayer?

PUSSY RIOT:

After serving two terms as President, Putin stepped down in 2008, conceding the Presidency to his political ally (and puppet, many argue), Dmitri Medvedev as there is a Russian law forbidding a President to hold more than two consecutive terms. For the following term, Putin then assumed the role of Prime Minister, as Medvedev became the head of state. Then, in September of 2012, Putin announced he would be running for a third term as President.

It was following Putin's "brutal" announcement that Pussy Riot was formed. Their inspiration for starting this group was that, "[Pussy Riot] realized that this country needs a militant, punk-feminist, street band that will rip through Moscow's streets and squares, mobilize public energy against the evil crooks of the Putinist junta and enrich the Russian cultural and political opposition."

THE BAND MEMBERS

Maria Alyokhina is 24 years old and is a student at the Institute of Journalism and Creative Writing in Moscow. She is also a member of Green Peace and supports the conservation of the largest lake in the world–Lake Baikal.

Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, despite being the youngest of the trio at 23-years old, is the informal leader of the group. She is a graduate of the University of Moscow where she studied philosophy. She is currently a member of "War," a dissident art group.

Yekaterina Samutsevich is 29 years old and studied at the Moscow Institute of Power and Engineering. According to The Independent, she once worked in a laboratory where she developed submarine and missile software.

None of the three women have a criminal record or history of violence.

THE TRIAL:

The closed-door trial of Pussy Riot members Alyokhina, Tolokonnikova, and Samutsevich began this week in the bulletproof Gadanski Court in Moscow. The trio are facing charges of "hooliganism motivated by religious hatred." No bail has been posted as they are considered "too dangerous" to be released. If they are found guilty, they face up to seven years of imprisonment and at least a minimum of two years.

They have been incarcerated for the past six months and have been denied access to family visits.

The presiding judge over the case is Marina Syrova and the lead prosecutor, Alexander Nikiforov. Two witnesses took to the stand on Wednesday, neither of whom actually witnessed the alleged crime on February 21, but described their immense "spiritual suffering." The first, Oleg Ugrik, is a strong Orthodox believer who, after watching their video online, condemned the trio for their desecration of the religious space. The second, Eteri Ivanishvili, is a bursar in an entirely different Church from the one in which the act occurred.

pussy-riotAll three defendants pleaded not guilty on Monday, claiming that their actions were merely political (and not an act of terrorism, as many are keen to believe) as they protested the Orthodox Church's public support for Putin.

NATIONAL RESPONSE:

Nikiforov, has stated that "this trial has practically split society into two parts." A survey released by the independent polling agency, the Levada Center, mirrors that statement, saying "a third of Russians polled saw the sentence of two to seven years as 'adequate,' 43 percent said it was excessive, and 15 percent are against any punishment at all." That leaves very little room for individuals who feel indifferent towards this case.

There is currently an online petition with 43,478 signatures from Pussy Riot supporters calling for their immediate release. Many liken Pussy Riot's imprisonment to witch hunts in the Middle Ages.

In comparison, the extreme radically-minded supporters of the Orthodox Church are demanding harsher punishment by the Kremlin in order to combat the these rising "anti-clerical forces."

Meanwhile Nikolai Polozov, the attorney for Pussy Riot, has become an overnight sensation and national hero in Russia.

INTERNATIONAL RESPONSE:

Madonna, Peter Gabriel, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Flea, Franz Ferdinand, Beastie Boys, and Sting are all famous musician supporters of these feminist punk rockers. Anthony Kiedes (of the Red Hot Chili Peppers) recently wore a Pussy Riot T-shirt at his Moscow concert and Madonna told Russian television she was "sorry" to hear about Pussy Riot's arrest.

Alex Kapranos of Franz Ferdinand Tweeted: "I'm sure you are all fans of their right to express their opinion. Any world leader who claims to be a fan of the Beatles and John Lennon ... then imprisons contemporary musicians who express their political views, is the worst kind of hypocrite: a dangerous one."

Meanwhile Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz held a benefit concert in Brooklyn two months ago for the imprisoned band members. Heliotropes, Shady Hawkins, and TinVulva also performed live sets at the concert.

The Washington Post, writer Stephen Fry, and Amnesty International are also among the supporters.

THE ORTHODOX CHURCH'S RESPONSE:

Despite the Russian Constitution stating that the Church must be separate from the state, the Russian Orthodox Church has long been a supporter of Putin and have instructed their followers to "rely on the state and to be grateful for its care." For Putin, religion and the Orthodox Church has been a frequent viable source of legitimization throughout his quest for political power. These two factions of power go hand-in-hand, so much so that "religious and bureaucratic tongues have become blurred." As an additional note, Putin has also committed $120 million to the rebuilding of Orthodox churches.

pussy-riotThe trial of Pussy Riot has become a prime opportunity for the Orthodox Church to condemn any opposition of the Church and by extension, Putin himself. Meanwhile, Putin has used this as an opportunity to reaffirm his own political power by way of siding with the anti-Western Russian Orthodox Church.

Ugrik, a passionate believer in the Orthodox Church, declared that "black energy swept over" him following Pussy Riot's desecration of his Church and that Pussy Riot had "lowered themselves into hell of their own volition."

Vsevolod Chaplin, a high-ranking spokesperson for the Church, gave this statement: "It was a sin against God and it is God that is judging it, and all Christians should know this." Following the public apology from Pussy Riot, Chaplin responded, "their words had a double meaning. Any acceptance of a mistake is a step in the right direction. But they also insulted the patriarch, who is a symbol of the church."

PUTIN'S RESPONSE:

While in London yesterday (after speaking with Prime Minister David Cameron and watching Olympic judo), Putin told the press that people "should not judge [Pussy Riot] too harshly" and hopes that "the court would will come out with the right decision, a well-founded one."

vladimir-putinPutin also noted that these women should feel lucky their prosecution is occurring in Russia rather than Israel or Russia's Muslim Caucasus. "I think if the girls had desecrated something in, let's say, Israel—there are some pretty strong guys there, you know—it wouldn't be too easy for them to get out of there," Înterfax reported.

"Or if they went to the Caucasus and desecrated some sacred Muslim place, we would not even have time to protect them," Putin added.

Sometimes, however, actions do speak louder than words. A day after he was inaugurated as President, Putin passed strict new laws banning protests on the streets. Special forces have also raided the homes of prominent and outspoken anti-Putin activists, including blogger Alexei Navalny, who now faces a potential ten years in prison. And top officials in the Kremlin, who are stauch Putin supporters, have proposed internet censorship similar to the Chinese.

Putin is Russia's court. He will decide the verdict in the end," Pyotr Verzilov, Tolokonnikova's husband said. "He is feeling enormous pressure both at home as well as abroad and, obviously, under such circumstances he no longer wants to be a bloody dictator."
