Beyoncé Fights Back After Harry Belafonte Blasts Her For Not Doing 'Social Good'

Beyonce

After singer Harry Belafonte told The Hollywood Reporter that Beyoncé and her husband Jay-Z "have turned their back on social responsibility," the music moguls are not pleased.

Beyoncé's camp immediately responded by sending an email to the Wall Street Journal  with "an abbreviated list of the unselfish work Beyoncé has done and continues to do."

According to the email, Beyoncé's charitable acts include:

  • Co-founding The Survivor Foundation “a multi-purpose community outreach facility in downtown Houston.”
  • Donating “100K in 2008 to the Gulf Coast Ike Relief Fund to aid Texas victims of Hurricane Ike.”
  • Performing in “MTV’s Hope For Haiti Now! Benefit in addition to making a generous monetary donation.”

While Beyoncé spoke this week United Nations General Assembly Hall in New York City, saying "We all see the headlines and we think what can I really do to help?" Jay-Z also has his own charitable foundation called the Shawn Carter Foundation—which helps 'individuals facing socio-economic hardships further their education."

But this isn't teh first time Jay-Z and Beyoncé's charitable giving has been under scrutiny.

In 2010, Jay-Z only reportedly donated $6,431 of his $63 million earnings to his own Shawn Carter Scholarship Fund, and out of the $87 million Beyoncé earned in 2010, zilch was given to her husband’s foundation.

And Belafonte isn't buying it, either.

When asked if he is 'happy with the image of members of minorities in Hollywood today" in his recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Belafonte replied "Not at all" and continued:

And I think one of the great abuses of this modern time is that we should have had such high-profile artists, powerful celebrities. But they have turned their back on social responsibility.

That goes for Jay-Z and Beyoncé, for example. Give me Bruce Springsteen, and now you’re talking. I really think he is black.

Michael Jackson's Neverland Ranch Was Just On Fire

neverland ranch

It's been a dramatic month for the Jackson family.

And now, reports from a local Santa Ynez news station are saying that Neverland Ranch—Michael's famed retreat/zoo/theme park—had a structure fire Tuesday.

Santa Barbara County Fire responded to the fire, but when crews arrived to the scene they said the flames were already tamed.

No word on which part of the ranch caught fire, or if any damage was done.

But according to TMZ, a grease-filled barbeque is to blame for the blaze.

During a big party on the grounds, staff lit the BBQ to get the coals hot but a grease build-up on the system ignited the hood system. After a bit of panic and three fire trucks later, the party was reportedly cancelled.

Neverland Ranch was owned by Michael until his death, when ownership was transferred to his estate—which is currently at the center of a Jackson family battle.

Man Gets Jail Time For Linking To Illegal TV Streams

Be careful what you link to online, because you may get jailed for it.

38-year-old Anton Vickerman has been sentenced to four years in prison after linking to illegal television shows and films on his website, SurfTheChannel.com.

According to the Guardian, Vickerman is the first British man to be jailed for a website linking to illegal films and television shows.

The Englishman reportedly earned $392,000 from the site he established in 2007 through advertisements.

The case didn't weigh so heavily on the fact Vickerman was linking out to these television shows. Rather, the court focused on him profiting from the links.

Vickerman was convicted on two counts of conspiracy to defraud, not copyright infringement.

Those who link out to free television streams recreationally here and there can breathe a sigh of relief; however, anyone who runs similar sites to Vickerman's may want to reconsider.

“This case conclusively shows that running a website that deliberately sets out to direct users to illegal copies of films and TV shows will result in a criminal conviction and a long jail sentence,” Keiron Sharp, director-general of FACT (Federation Against Copyright Theft) told the Guardian

Vickerman isn't the first person to be accused of hyperlinking to illegal material online for money. Alan Elis, operator of former music-sharing site Oink, was acquitted last year of conspiracy to defraud,

Though these cases have followed those profiting off of illegal video streams, the sentencing may make Internet users think before they link.

Just because Tom Cruise and Kristen Stewart may be Forbes' highest-paid actors of 2012, that doesn't necessarily mean they're worth the most in Hollywood.

After paychecks, taxes, and expenses, how much money do the stars have left afterwards?

Deutsch LA compiled different celebrities' net worths in mobile game High Rollaz, allowing users to guess the value of celebrities from Penelope Cruz to Drew Carey, who ranks surprisingly high.

Robert Pattinson: 'I've Never Been Interested In Trying To Sell My Personal Life'

$

robert pattinson

No amount of food will make Robert Pattinson open up about his recent breakup with actress Kristen Stewart.

He just wants to talk movies.

The "Twilight" actor started making the rounds this week in New York City to promote his new film, "Cosmopolis," but rather, has found himself baited with sweet treats to discuss the "elephant in the room."

Jon Stewart brought out Ben and Jerry's ice cream for the actor on Monday night's "The Daily Show," to get the actor to open up during his first interview since the couple's split, joking they were "just two gals catching up."

However, the actor remained silent about his "Twilight" costar.

This morning on Good Morning America, George Stephanopoulos tried his luck by playfully presenting Pattinson with a box of cereal.

"We did our research, and I thought it was more appropriate for breakfast, your favorite cereal, Cinnamon Toast Crunch," said Stephanopoulos.

Urging him to dig in and then complimenting his "gripping" performance in "Cosmopolis," the GMA anchor dived right into addressing what's on "everyone's mind."

"Everybody just wants to know how are you doing? And, what do you want your fans to know about what's going on in your personal life?"

Take a look at Pattinson's initial response from the question as he goes from blank stare to nervous in four seconds.

robert pattinson gma

Pattinson diverted the question, taking a drawn out sip from a GMA mug, and looking every which way but at Stephanopoulos before stumbling over his words and making it about his fans and his "favorite" cereal.

"I'd like my fans to know that Cinnamon Toast Crunch only has 30 calories a bowl in it for instance," said Pattinson.

The actor followed up making sure Stephanopoulos and everyone knew the real reason he's making the rounds in New York this week.

"I've never been interested in trying to sell my personal life, and that's really the only reason people bring it up," Pattinson told GMA. "The reason you go on to TV is to promote movies ... That's the only way to do it."

Conversation quickly swung over to Pattinson's latest film.

Watch the interview below. Stephanopoulos asks Pattinson the big question at the :50 second mark.

Hollywood Banker Claims $50M In Damages After Alleged Police Beating

$

Brian MulliganBrian Mulligan, vice chairman and managing director of Deutsche Bank’s Los Angeles media practice, has filed a claim accusing LAPD officers of beating him without probable cause after a confrontation with police in which he was arrested in May.

Mulligan, who in February hooked up MGM with a $500 million credit line, claims he sustained a broken shoulder blade, 15 nasal fractures, facial scars, difficulty smelling and breathing, and damages of as much as $50 million, his attorney, J. Michael Flanagan, told Bloomberg in an interview.

And now city prosecutors are considering whether to file charges against Mulligan, 52, who was forcibly subdued in the early morning hours in May by LAPD after trying to enter moving vehicles and then charging officers who approached him, Los Angeles Police Lieutenant Andy Neiman told Bloomberg.

After being detained by police in the Highland Park area (Flanagan declined to say why his client was there) and it was determined that Mulligan was not under the influence of a controlled substance, officers allowed the Hollywood banker to spend the night at a hotel per his request to "sleep it off."

“They put him in a motel and said, ‘You’re a dead man if you leave here,’” Flanagan told Bloomberg. “Maybe the fact that he had $5,000 in cash had something to do with it.”

Flanagan refused to say why Mulligan was carrying so much cash on his person. Police stopped him after he was allegedly seen trying to get into occupied autos in the drive-through lane of a fast-food restaurant.

But Mulligan didn't listen to the cops and tried to flee the motel, before being apprehended about six blocks away, where he was beaten and arrested, Flanagan said. Now Mulligan is seeking $50 million in damages.

The erratic behavior was especially bizarre for Mulligan, an established banker who specializes in financing for Hollywood film and television studios.

Mulligan joined Frankfurt-based Deutsche Bank in 2009 and previously was chairman of Brooknol Advisors LLC, an entertainment advisement and investment firm. Before that he had senior executive roles at Seagram Co., Universal Pictures and Fox Television. In February, he participated in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc.’s $500 million credit facility deal.

Jodie Foster Blasts Media In Defense Of Kristen Stewart

Jodie FosterFormer child star Jodie Foster doesn't like the way the public have been treating Kristen Stewart

After the 22-year-old "Twilight" actress recently got caught cheating on her boyfriend Robert Pattinson with her 41-year-old "Snow White and the Huntsman" director Rupert Sanders, she has been ripped apart by the public

In an essay for The Daily Beast, Foster—Stewart's "Panic Room" co-star—defends the actress, saying how difficult it it's become to be in the public eye compared to when she was starting out.

"If I were a young actor today I would quit before I started," writes Foster. "If I had to grow up in this media culture, I don’t think I could survive it emotionally."

Jodie Foster Kriste Stewart Panic Room"Sarah Tobias would never have danced before her rapists in "The Accused." Clarice would never have shared the awful screaming of the lambs to Dr. Lecter. Another actress might surely have taken my place, opened her soul to create those characters, surrendered her vulnerabilities. But would she have survived the paparazzi peering into her windows, the online harassment, the public humiliations, without overdosing in a hotel room or sticking her face with needles until she became unrecognizable even to herself?"

Foster goes on to paint a portrait of what a typical day might be like for Stewart.

"A beautiful young woman strides down the sidewalk alone, head down, hands drawn into fists. She’s walking fast, darting around huge men with black cameras thrusting at her mouth and chest. “Kristen, how do you feel?” “Smile Kris!” “Hey, hey, did you get her?” “I got her. I got her!” The young woman doesn’t cry. F--- no. She doesn’t look up. She’s learned. She keeps her head down, her shades on, fists in her pockets. Don’t speak. Don’t look. Don’t cry."

Finally, Foster ends letting Stewart know that things will get better, and urges her remain strong.

"My mother had a saying that she doled out after every small injustice, every heartbreak, every moment of abject suffering. 'This too shall pass.' … The public horrors of today eventually blow away. And, yes, you are changed by the awful wake of reckoning they leave behind. You trust less. You calculate your steps. You survive. Hopefully in the process you don’t lose your ability to throw your arms in the air again and spin in wild abandon. That is the ultimate F.U. and—finally—the most beautiful survival tool of all. Don’t let them take that away from you."

NYC Club Sues Drake And Chris Brown For $16 Million Fight Over Rihanna

chris brown drake fight The club where Drake and Chris Brown got into a physical altercation, reportedly over their shared ex-girlfriend Rihanna, is suing the pair for $16 million.

Entertainment Enterprises, the company that owns the Greenhouse trademark, claims the two artists were responsible for the June 14 brawl at their Manhattan club, W.i.P.

According to the papers filed in Manhattan Supreme Court on Wednesday, the pair "began to fight violently with each other" and "made deadly weapons" out of whatever they could find.

The suit specifically says that, at minimum, the two did nothing to stop the fight between their two entourages, and that they, “Overtook the entire space. Terrorized patrons ran for cover...most were unable to protect themselves.”

Entertainment Enterprises is also owner of the adjacent club Greenhouse. The lawsuit alleges the melee cost them a $4 million licensing deal. The bar was also temporarily shut down and lost its liquor license

Police are still investigating the brawl, but no criminal charges have been filed.

The suit says the stars “should have foreseen that their notoriety and celebrity would ensure that their acts had far reaching and devastating effects."

One of the injured patrons was NBA star Tony Parker, who was hit in the eye by flying glass and is suing the club for $20 million.

Maybe the two could just pay the money directly to Parker and call it even.

Al-Roker, Today-Show

Well it appears Al Roker is on Team Curry.

The 'Today Show' personality made a not-so-subtle jab at anchor Matt Lauer and the way the Ann Curry situation was handled during Thursday morning's broadcast.

Roker, Lauer, and Curry's replacement Savannah Guthrie were interviewing the gold medal-winning U.S. Women's Rowing team, and discussing the tradition of throwing a teammate into the water after winning a race.

"The tradition here in New York is you throw her in the Hudson River," joked Lauer.

A full ten seconds after the joke, Roker chimed in, "Which is different than our tradition… which is you throw one of us under the bus, but that’s another story."

Guthrie and Lauer responded with a stern "Mr. Roker."

The awkward 'Today' moments are piling up, following Curry's return as a correspondent last week in London

The clip has since been removed from NBC's website.

Today marks the 35th anniversary of Elvis Presley's death on August 16, 1977.

On Wednesday, thousands of fans converged at Graceland to commemorate the King and got a surprise welcome from the music superstar's former wife and daughter—marking the first time Priscilla and Lisa Marie Presley have appeared together at the annual gathering.

Noticeably absent was Lisa Marie's beautiful, 23-year-old budding actress daughter: Riley Keough.

But Keough is busy shooting a "Mad Max" reboot in Africa alongside Charlize Theron and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, after starring in this summer's Steven Soderbergh-directed "Magic Mike."

And she has three films lined up after that.

From taking over the big screen today to modeling in her younger years, Keough, who was born 12 years after her famous grandfather died, has chosen to follow in her family's show business footsteps.

With Elvis officially gone for 35 years and Lisa Marie putting her music career on hold, it is Keough who is set to take her grandfather's place in the limelight.

May 29, 1989: Danielle Riley Keough is born to Lisa Marie Presley and Danny Keough. Riley, as she is called, is the eldest grandchild of Elvis and Priscilla Presley.

50 Years After Her Death, The Business Of Marilyn Monroe Is Still Booming

$

marilyn monroe statue

On August 5, 1962, Marilyn Monroe died at the age of 36.

50 years later, Monroe remains as much of a cultural icon as ever. And the Hollywood bombshell's selling power is just as powerful—if not more.

Her name and estate could generate nearly $30 million in sales this year.

After Monroe's image and likeness were purchased by Authentic Brands Group and partner NECA in 2010, "the company is in the midst of upgrading Monroe offerings from trinkets to cosmetic lines, spas, salons and apparel," reports the AP.

In addition, "a new digital emphasis" will now be placed on the late star's estate, which includes a wealth of photos, fashion, films and other cultural touchstones.

Part of the digital emphasis includes a Twitter account—@MarilynMonroe, "tweeting on behalf of the Estate of Marilyn Monroe"—which, at last count, has 64,352 followers and is even verified. Kim Kardashian and Katy Perry are among the 22 people she follows.

MArilyn Monroe Facebook PageHer Facebook page, which keeps fans up to date on any Marilyn-related news and posts the actress' past quotes, has 3.5 million likes.

"Of all the people who've clicked the 'like' button at [the Marilyn Monroe] Facebook page, the top two age groups are the 13-to-17-year-old age group and the 18-to-24 group," Authentic's chief marketing officer Nick Woodhouse told the LA Times. "She really resonates with youth."

And it doesn't hurt that the NBC drama "Smash," which is produced by Steven Spielberg and stars "American Idol" alum Katherine McPhee, follows fictional efforts to create a Broadway show based on Monroe's life. Authentic Brands promotes sales of the show and memorabilia.

"In some ways, she's more popular and well-known today than she was even then," said Lawrence Schiller, a photographer friend of Monroe's who penned the memoir "Marilyn & Me."

Authentic Brands CEO Jamie Salter told the AP "Our aim has been to clean up the brand" with a shift away from "souvenir-type stuff" and toward what he calls the mid-tier luxury business. Current partners include Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, MAC Cosmetics and Marilyn Monroe Cafes, a group of high-end coffee shops.

And Salter's plan is working. Forbes estimates that Monroe raked in $27 million in 2011, falling third behind music superstars Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley.

Here Are The 20 Most Popular Celebrities On Facebook

$
0
0

rihanna

Hollywood's biggest actors may be some of the wealthiest, but that doesn't mean they're the most "liked" celebrities on Facebook.

Some of them aren't even well-branded on the social media site. (Tom Cruise's page has slightly more than 2 million likes. And, as far as we can tell, Kristen Stewart doesn't even have a "real" Facebook outlet. Instead, she has a fan-made timeline and an old page with little more than a Wikipedia entry on the "Twilight" star.)

Rather, the most popular celebrities on Facebook are singers and television shows.

The list includes the biggest entertainment brands pulled from data curated by Likester, who's adCenter follows trending topics on Facebook.

Among the top 20 entertainment timelines, only two actors appear.

Even more surprising may be the huge names left off the list. On the overall list of most-liked brands and celebrities on Facebook, Britney Spears is nowhere near the top, clocking in at the 92nd spot on the list. And three television shows–and one film franchise–kick Adam Sandler, Taylor Swiftthe Black Eyed Peas, and Vin Diesel off the list.

20. Will Smith: 34,279,739 (Joined: September 8, 2008)

WHY IT WORKS:

Smith posts some of the most artistic photos of himself to Facebook—just take a look at his Timeline photo.

The actor keeps us up to date with his family sharing his kids' and Jada's latest ventures, sends out photos while prepping for films.

He also shares links with his fans encouraging them to register to vote and check out charities, like water, he and his wife Jada support. The non-profit helps bring clean water to those in developing nations.

19. David Guetta: 34,638,812 (Joined: November 16, 2007)

WHY IT WORKS:

Guetta's appearance isn't that surprising after his latest album had seven big radio hits off last year's "Nothing But the Beat."

The artist expands his social network through posts in both English and French.

He gives fans direct access to new music, tour dates, and his YouTube videos. A hidden gem is a Guitar Hero-esque game, "Summer Blitz."

On Tuesday, Guetta revealed his latest single, "She Wolf," on his timeline.

18. Avril Lavigne: 35,283,821 (Joined: October 1, 2007)

WHY IT WORKS:

Shocked? You're not the only one; however, the singer is attempting a comeback with a new album out soon.

Lavigne's huge presence is probably due not only to personal photos, but also the amount of stories and music she shares that aren't her own. The posts make like a genuine person on the social networking site as opposed to a filler bot.

Fledgling actor Vivek Shah was arrested August 10 for allegedly trying to extort millions from Harvey Weinstein, Christopher Cline, and three others.

According to The Smoking Gun, the 25-year-old actor sent five similar extortion letters between the months of June and July threatening to kill if he didn't receive funds to the tune of $13 million transferred to offshore accounts.

According to an affidavit from Postal Inspector Joshua Mehall, alleged victims are believed to include Weinstein, philanthropist and coal mining entrepreneur Christopher Cline, Eric Lefkofsky of Groupon, and two billionaire oil and gas company founders.

The 60-year-old Weinstein is described as “a Connecticut resident and co-founder of a film studio" in the affidavit.

Shah, an aspiring actor from Akron, Ohio, according to IMDB, made appearances in the television series "Bones," NBC's short-lived "Outsourced" and played a bank hostage in the beginning of 2008's "The Dark Knight."

His page also claims he "frequently volunteers his time at the Cedars-Sinai hospital in Los Angeles, CA."

The actor is currently in custody until a detention hearing. The alleged charges he faces for sending extortion letters carry a prison sentence of up to 20 years

Yesterday, we told you Jay-Z was suing the former chef of his 40/40 club for $1.5 million, but the exact reason was unknown.

Well, now the New York Post is reporting that the reason was .. chicken wings.

When chef Mike Shand left the club, he reportedly took with him the recipes to several menu items, including the chicken wings, leading to the lawsuit.

The Post says Shand "happily handed over all his recipes" except his spice mix for the wings.

“The spice-mix recipe that Mike developed is his own recipe," Shand's lawyer Vik Pawar told the Post. "40/40 terminated him, then had the audacity to sue him for his recipes. He gave them all apart from this spice mix because it is his own. Mike had a wonderful relationship with Jay-Z and Beyonce for many years.”

Tony Danza made it seem like he may consider throwing his shoe in the race for mayor of New York City outside the premiere of new film, "Premium Rush," starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

“I’m of a certain age, and you see things, and you think maybe you could help,” said Danza. “You say: ‘Let me fix the city. Let me run for Mayor.’”

While sharing his views on local transportation, the "Who's the Boss?" star doesn't even know what party he'd run for, but thinks he could take on Baldwin.
